The Ruined Villa is a possible scavenging locations. There are two possible scenarios here: Soldiers and Couple.

Deserters Variant[]

NPCs[]

Depending on RNG, there are either 3 or 4 soldiers. Two of them always sit in a kitchen and talk about abductee held in captivity in a locked basement; they are armed with shotguns. If you happen to have 3-men scenario, then the 3rd soldier (armed with assault rifle) usually patrols stairs room, in front side of a villa. This situation, with a bit of patience, can be solved even by crowbar-armed Anton in one night. If it's 4-men scenario, then the 3rd soldier either does the same thing as said earlier or behaves more like Jagoda in Couple scenario, roaming around the place and searching for something in shelves and lockers (though unlike Jagoda, he exclusively explores only stairs room), while an additional 4th soldier (armed with shotgun) walks around almost whole first floor, excluding your only entrance. This one is much harder to complete, especially in more than one night, as it will be said later on.

Strategy[]

Since there are two soldiers sitting in kitchen and facing the doors leading there, going there as Arica leaves you with no other option than to open the door and hopelessly try to shoot both of soldiers, as you can't lure them away from each other neither by footsteps or by using a crowbar on a locked door on top floor, and there is no furniture placed well enough to make a noise and distract only one of them. Other than that, any character with at least average running speed and strong enough to achieve an instakill from a hiding spot will do the trick.

Also, you might want to turn in-game music off so you'll hear footsteps better.

Equipment[]

  • Crowbar
  • at least Shovel, just in case you miss an instakill
  • Helmet, in case of emergency - you don't need your own vest as every NPC here has one
  • Lock pick, in case of a big messup

Walkthrough: 3-men scenario[]

Sneak under your only entrance, move your screen so you can see the doors to the kitchen and the doors above them and wait. If doors to the kitchen opened once and nothing can be heard, or footsteps can be heard with nobody in stairs hall, then it's 3-men scenario, so depending on where the 3rd guy is, wait for him to walk somewhere where he won't see you climbing to the entrance, make a noise and hide in a nearest dark spot. When he'll search for a source of a sound, kill him. Now you're basically free to loot the whole place excluding kitchen, as long as you will be sneaking. Search his body, grab his vest if you have none, make sure all the doors are closed and sneak near closed door on top floor. There, click on an icon of pryopening the door with crowbar and as soon as you'll see a circle representing noise you've just made, run to a hiding spot that is near. Only one soldier will hear this sound and go check what is happening. Wait for him to start walking back and when he's near the end of stairs (he will be out of your survivor's sight), go out, sneak to the wall, make a loud footstep there and sneak back to hiding spot. This way he will again go to the source of noise and if done correctly, he will be standing directly in front of you, waiting for your attack. If not, wait for him to go down and repeat, you should have enough time to try this tactic at least 2-3 times in one night. When you kill him, usually the last soldier will hear the fight and run to your place, but you will have enough time to hide again in the same place and finish the job - if he won't hear you, then just sneak to the darkspot below, lure him with footsteps and make a last kill.

However, if you forgot to close the doors between stairs in a main passage, then either of soldiers (usually second one as first one goes up to your position through bathroom, though he will usually go back to kitchen through stairs room if you don't kill him) will see the body of first killed soldier and run there instead of source of sounds, making them trigger-happy and look for you randomly all around the villa. In that case, quickly open the closed doors with lockpick when they are far away enough, close the door behind you now, time your drop to the entrance and run for your life.

Walkthrough: 4-men scenario[]

If you look at the screen and see doors above the kitchen opening, hear footsteps and see red circles indicating someone close by, then it's 4-men scenario and you need to be much more cautious as it's also more random than 3-men version. This time, climb to the entrance and stay in a spot you've climbed. Usually the 3rd soldier will be right in a middle of main passage, looking for something in a cabinet. Don't move until he moves a bit in any direction. If he'll start climbing stairs to your direction, quickly jump down before he'll be able to see and hear you and wait for your next opportunity. If you chose Roman or Boris then you can make a footstep right near a wall so the soldier will go out to investigate it and with good timing you will be able to lethally backstab him before he turns his face in your direction, though it's pretty risky. If he goes below entrance, lure him with footsteps, move your screen to the right and look for patrolling soldier. If he's not coming yet or is coming from upper door, kill the lured soldier, if he's going from kitchen - stay in place as you won't be quick enough to finish the kill before he sees you. In this case, your only way is to escape as even if you managed to run away, the soldier will either wait for you, pointing his gun at the entrance of the villa or run after you and easily gun you down if you hestiate to run to exit. Also, on next night it will be very hard to lure the guy anywhere outside of open space and away from two kitchen soldiers as he's not moving close enough to the first darkspot to be lured there and dead bodies disappear after a night finishes.

If you managed to pull out the first kill without being seen, then stay in the same darkspot until patrolling soldier goes out - he will see the body, run to it and let you get himself killed too. If he's taking his time, open the doors between stairs and go back to darkspot - when he goes out, he'll first notice opened doors, walk to them and then notice dead body. After getting both of them down, close all the doors and get rid of remaining two soldiers the same way as said above.

Note that if you don't kill the 2nd soldier, he well eventually go through the kitchen to notice the rest of his crew about their buddy being dead and even Roman won't do well enough in 3vs1 situation.

Morale[]

Deserters have a reputation more akin to thugs and bandits. As such, killing and robbing them will not induce any morale penalty among the group.

If we need to steal to survive, I'd rather we would steal from thugs than innocent people. My only concern is that it's dangerous.

–Marin

I'm glad [Scavenger] stole from those bandits. We'll make better use of their supplies than they would.

–Roman

They had been robbing helpless civilians. [Scavenger] managed to return the favor.

–Katia

Couple Variant[]

Strategy[]

Killing the couple is highly discouraged, as they are both considered as civilians, so killing them will devastate the survivors' morale and affect their endings. Even if you decided to rob the villa with force, it is enough just to kill Emil only and Jagoda will not resist once Emil is dead even if you loot the entire house empty. Nevertheless, it is actually possible to loot the entire area without killing anyone. Note that Emil is hostile and will attack you with a knife, while Jagoda will simply alert Emil to your presence.

  • First, sneak down the basement and remove a barricade from the door to have an alternate escape path and make subsequent break-ins easier.
  • Emil most of the time either sits or sleeps in his bedroom, and if he leaves it, he goes only to a bathroom to grab some meds from a closet placed there. Jagoda walks around basically whole place, with an exception of a basement and a top floor. If feeling patient, you can use their behavior to your advantage, hide in a dark spot right before Emil's bedroom and wait until he leaves. Emil takes his time, so it's not a problem to loot his room before he's back. This tactic may not prove to be 100% successful though, as it's not unusual for Emil to stay in his place through whole night and Jagoda may randomly walk around there too.
  • Unlike most NPCs in a game, if Jagoda sees opened door, she won't think that she left it opened - instead she'll get startled that someone broke into the house and run to alert Emil about unwanted guest, so it is crucial to always close the door behind you here.
  • To loot Emil's room by any means necessary, alert Jagoda, then run and hide in the dark corner under his room. After the two head downstairs to search for you, get inside Emil's room and loot it. There's a locked cabinet outside the room (on the left).
  • The couple will move from room to room. Emil always moves one room ahead. The two always stick together, so just keep out of their movement path and move slowly, there should be no problem. It is advisable to close doors after opening them, so that they won't come and investigate.
  • You could freely loot the whole basement area when you enter it, it is impossible for them to notice if you are not running or breaking a lock with the crowbar.
  • If something fails and you'll need to retreat, Emil is fortunately not a sprinter and has no firearm, so if reacting quickly, even Boris will make it out unharmed.

Notes[]

  • If available, Arica does a fantastic job here as her Sneaks Quietly trait allows her to pick up both locks with crowbar without alerting anyone and she can run freely without worrying about being heard, allowing you to quickly place all the items in a more convienient spot to be picked up later by a character with bigger backpack capacity like Marko or Boris.
  • Oddly enough, even though it seems like you're breaking into someone's house (like in Quiet House location), there are no loot piles marked as private property, leaving you free to take as much as you can.
  • Two notes can be found in the area. According to the notes, Emil is the house's owner and a widower. Jagoda moved in, helped him with his wound and he seemed to have got over his wife's death.
  • Like in Soldiers scenario, there are nine pieces of furniture you can chop up with the hatchet to obtain wood and fuel.
