Before the war, I used to own a restaurant. I even had my own TV show: "Bruno's Cuisine", I'm sure you've seen it. I visited beautiful places where I was filmed cooking exquisite dishes. All of that seems of no importance now, don't you think? Nowadays, you're lucky if you get your hands on some canned meat or a bag of rice. And who knows how long this war is going to last.

–Bruno's Description

Overview[]

Bruno is one of the many playable characters found in the game. He was a famous chef prior to the war, with his own restaurant and TV show. Now, he seeks to discover the fate of a dear friend while trying to survive alone.

Bruno's trait Good Cook allows him to craft Moonshine, Pure Alcohol, Cooked Meals and Medications with fewer resources compared to others.

Bruno's in-game appearance

Appearance[]

Bruno wears a beige sleeveless puffer jacket over a striped brown shirt, and a pair of black pants. He carries a beige shoulder bag.

Personality[]

Bruno belongs to the egoist archetype. He appears to be the most selfish character, likely because of his privileged position before the war as a celebrity.

Bruno is concerned about himself first and foremost. He is barely affected by most crimes like theft or murder, even against civilians, though he will still take issue with killing civilians himself. He is generally reluctant to help others, and won’t easily be content if he does. He also cares little for his group's conditions, but will become sad easily when his own needs are not met. If his mood is negative, he’s likely to argue or fight with other survivors, and to rob the shelter if he leaves.

If traumatized enough, he will permanently shift to the insensitive modifier. Bruno’s selfishness is greatly magnified, to the point where he'll even regret doing good deeds, thinking that he shouldn't have risked his life, or that he should've taken advantage of the situation for his own benefit.

Strategy[]

Bruno's talent makes him the best survivor for cooking and brewing. His Cooked Meals discount is largest with the Crude Stove and without Vegetables, so it's most impactful during the early game. His value jumps exponentially if one leans into trading as he can produce Moonshine and Medications, which make for valuable trade items, at a discount (Meds even more so, since Med Ingredients is a rare resource). This strategy is especially effective when combined with Katia's trade bonuses, and with the right trader. Matey at the Garage will pay more for Meds, and Bojan at the Military Outpost for Moonshine. This table lists the value (in components) of a bottle of meds and moonshine versus the value of the ingredients needed to craft one, in warm weather with Franko (tested as of Jan 26th, 2023).

Item value
Ingredients Ingredients (w/ Bruno) Crafted
Medications 22 11 31
Moonshine 11 8 13

For reference, the Moonshine Still costs 35 components, the Herbal Workshop costs 27 components and the Improved Herbal Workshop costs a further 119 components without a building discount (such as from Marin).

Note that the material cost is calculated when initiating the crafting action. Having Bruno start the project and letting someone else finish it will not change the materials used, thus freeing him up for other tasks.

With an average inventory size of 10 slots and average combat proficiency, Bruno should preferably stay in the shelter rather than going out to scavenge. Luckily he is decent as a guard if needed to be and when armed until better characters turn up.

As one of the least empathetic survivors, Bruno is a good candidate to commit crimes if he's in a tight spot. Murdering civilians should still be avoided if possible though, as he will still get sad when doing so, and it may bring down the morale of more sensitive survivors in the group.

Recruitment Speech[]

Ok, I won't lie to you, I'm looking for a place to stay until this madness is over. Before the war I was a chef, I even had my own TV programme for some time. Now I'm penniless and homeless. If you let me stay, I can cook for all of us.

Death Note[]

Maybe Bruno wasn’t the kindest person I knew, but we were in this together and now he’s dead…

–Note on dead body

Character Story []

  1. "I used to be an optimist - one of those people who'd have sworn that war wouldn't come. Wars happened far away, in third-world countries. Or so I thought. Even when I was listening to the news getting scarier day by day, I did not believe at all that was about to happen."
  2. "I have a dearest friend who always worried a lot. One day she called me, terrified, saying there was a riot outside, the secessionists were inciting the crowd to burn the town hall. I told her not to worry. And I was right! Nothing came of it - this time. But even when the riots and fights became everyday news, I kept assuring her it would all blow over soon."
  3. "I have a house just outside the city and ride a bus to work. One day I was in my restaurant here in Pogoren, not really noticing the muted TV showing some scenes of heavy fighting - and suddenly I recognized the location. It was my town. My friend was there. With pounding heart, I grabbed my coat and rushed towards the sounds of gunfire."
  4. "At the bus station I learnt from the other commuters that we were under siege, and no bus towards my town would leave. I was shattered. If it wasn't for me, my friend would've left the town and gone abroad to her aunt. But I convinced her to stay. And now... Now I don't know if she's well. I haven't heard from her ever since the siege began..."

Traumatized variants:[]

  1. "People are fools, but I was their king. I used to think that whatever our differences, we won't just start shooting each other one day. That it's something... other people do. Not us! We lived together for centuries, we are a civilized nation. Stupidity is lethal. Mine probably killed my dearest friend."
  2. "I answered the phone one day, and it was my friend, incoherent, crying that there was a crowd outside her house and how they were going to burn everything and she had to flee the country. I calmed her as well as I could - fortunately, the crowd dispersed soon - and I kept soothing her fears in the coming weeks. Did a really good job with that. She decided to stay."
  3. "I was in the restaurant, watching the patrons argue over their dinner and not really noticing the news showing some heavy fighting, when it hit me: they're showing Pogoren outskirts! It's my town! Where my friend lives! I don't know what I was hoping for when I rushed out the door and to the bus station."
  4. "It was too late. The siege was on, we were already cut off, all rides to my town were cancelled. And it was already too late to do anything for my friend, anyway. I should've thought about that before I lulled her into a false sense of security. I don't know what happened to her. Most likely I'll never learn, but I fear the worst."

Endings[]

Ending Description

Suicide "After having lost all hope, Bruno tied the noose around his neck. His last thoughts was of his last friend, and of what could have been but wasn't mean to be."
Abandoned "Bruno left the shelter one night. He was trying to reach his friend and got shot while attempting to slip between army pickets."
Rejected "Bruno was denied refuge in the shelter. His fate beyond that day remains unknown."
Karma "After the ceasefire Bruno went looking for his friend. Her neighborhood witnessed heavy fighting, and most of the houses were reduced to ruins. She was nowhere to be found, and her neighbors did not know what happened to her. Bruno never saw her again."
Sad "After the ceasefire Bruno went looking for his friend. Her neighborhood saw heavy fighting, and most of the houses had been reduced to ruins, but she found shelter in the basement which held. Eating rats and scavenging scraps of food, she somehow managed to survive. Bruno felt responsible for her misery. He has never forgiven himself."
Good "After the ceasefire Bruno set off looking for his friend. Her neighborhood saw heavy fighting and the majority of the housing had been reduced to ruins, but she found shelter in the basement which somehow held. Despite the hardships she managed to survive and was happy to see Bruno alive as well. They remained friends to this day."
  • Bruno is one of the half of characters who are dead in the Abandoned ending. He has an unfortunate fate leading to his demise while trying to reach his friend.
  • He is one of the only two characters whose method of suicide is described, the other is Emilia: he hangs himself while she slits her wrists.
  • There is not much difference between his Sad and Good endings. However his Sad ending depicts his friend's struggle for survival by eating rats and scraps of food, which makes Bruno feel very guilty.

Trivia[]

  • Before the war, Bruno met Katia on his cooking show.
  • Bruno and Marko are good friends.
  • Prior to the version 1.3 update, Bruno did not receive a discount for 2x Cooked Meals on the Improved Stove; this was apparently an oversight and fixed with the update. Version 1.3, removed his discount for Medications, which then became temporarily exclusive to the Pharmacist Custom Character up until The Little Ones expansion.
