I'm a simple girl from the hood and I know life. Street raised me more than my father did. That old sot beat me whenever he felt like it and knew how to make it hurt. That's all over now, he bit the dust in the first days of the war. I've been a cat burglar since I turned 14, you know how it is. I'm better at it than anyone you know and I can sneak like a fox. You'd be a fool kicking me out.

–Arica's Description

Overview[]

Arica is one of the many Playable Characters found in the game. Often mistreated by her father, she's made a living for herself as a burglar on the streets of Gravia. She fled to Pogoren following the military's massacre of her hometown.

Arica has the Sneaks Quietly trait. This greatly silences her various actions, such as running, jumping, looting, or using a Crowbar, but not the Hatchet.

Arica's in-game appearance

Appearance[]

Arica wears a blue hoodie and a pair of grey cargo pants. She carries a black backpack.

Personality[]

Arica belongs to the survivalist archetype. Her harsh background has made her tough, but despite that she hasn't fully lost her compassion.

Arica’s reasonably pragmatic. She’s still happy to aid others, and is greatly concerned about her fellow survivors' well-being. However, she will go to great lengths to survive, and will be more tolerant if she or others committed crimes against thugs, soldiers, or even civilians, though not without a degree of remorse. She’s least likely to commit suicide and most likely to rob the shelter when she leaves out of all archetypes.

If traumatized enough, she will permanently shift to the insensitive modifier. She becomes more selfish and focused on her survival. She starts to turn a blind eye to crimes, reasoning that she can regret later if she survives the war.

Strategy[]

Arica's ability makes her the perfect choice for theft, as her reduced noise production allows her to avoid detection. In particular, she can run without alerting any NPCs on the floors directly above or below. She can also loot piles without making any noise at all, letting her loot beds that NPCs are sleeping on (such as the ill father's bed in the Garage). Able to use the loud Crowbar silently negates the need for a Lock Pick entirely. However, she is not a good choice as a scavenger in general due to her small inventory size.

Arica can be a good combatant as well. She is the second best fighter in the game, behind the rebel deserter Roman. She can perform a backstab instakill using any melee weapon except the crowbar. Her stealth further encourages her to utilize backstabs by allowing her to run up an unsuspecting enemy's back without being detected (other survivors will have to walk), or to traverse a hostile location more freely in general. Her ability comes with a tradeoff though; unlike other survivors, she can't set up a stealth ambush by running in front of a hiding spot to generate noise and attract an enemy to that spot. This can be partially circumvented by chopping furniture with a hatchet, but this option is limited at best because it's reliant on environmental set pieces.

Aside from her excellent combat potential, Arica is also a powerful guard.

Arica is fairly resistant to mood changes from moral choices, making her an acceptable choice to commit theft or murder.

Recruitment Speech[]

Hey, what's up? Nice place you got here. I'm looking for some place to lay low for a while. I used to live in a large block of flats till it got shelled. Heres the deal; you let me stay here, I help you out. I can move as quiet as a cat.

Death Note[]

Arica claimed to be as quiet as a cat, or was it a fox? Anyway, apparently that wasn’t enough to save her.

–Note on dead body

Character Story[]

  1. "I told you about my old man - I hated that asshole... But war does things to people. That night, when the bombs fell on Gravia, something changed. What he did... I'll never forget it. You heard what they did in Gravia, right?"
  2. "On that night I got a shrapnel in my thigh. The army entered the city and indiscriminately started slaughtering rebels and civilians. We had to scram and I couldn't even rise from my bed. So I was just lying there, waiting for death to come. I was hoping the old drunk to save himself, not stay with me till the end. Why worry about something you can't change?"
  3. "He carried me out of the city. He walked all night. We flowed with a terrified crowd. Father carried me all the way. I have no idea where that old alcoholic found the strength. The day broke and he was still carrying me. When we got here, he just dropped to his knees and died. I will always remember the last words he whispered."
  4. He'd always been rough, never said what lay heavily on him, but at that moment he broke. "You have to make it, kid," he said right before he died. "You gotta be tough, all that's bad will end someday". He looked at me, pleading. "Like me."

Traumatized variants:[]

  1. "I made it all the way from Gravia to Pogoren, and for what? More shelling, more bloodshed. Maybe it would've been better if I'd died there and then. You heard what the Grazni did in Gravia?"
  2. "After several hours of bombing the town, the military stormed the city and started slaughtering rebels and civilians like cattle. Wounded by shrapnel, I couldn't run. Couldn't even walk. I was sure my old man would leave me behind. The asshole never cared about me anyway. Why would he, all of a sudden?"
  3. "Without saying a word he lifted me up, and started walking. He walked all night like that. Grim, determined, silent. The sun rose and he kept on walking. Where did he even get the strength for that? Beats me. But he carried me all the way to Pogoren. And as soon as we got here, he collapsed to the ground and died. Was it worth it?"
  4. "He carried me here and left me alone. We never talked much, he always kept his thoughts to himself. You know what he said right before he died? - "This is the last time anyone ever helped you, kid. You're on your own now."
