I've been running into either insufferable rubes or outright criminals. But I feel that you're different. And for a scientist with an established position like me, the company of people of comparable mental capacity is paramount. Besides.. ah, bloody hell, I can't stand faking it anymore! I'm just an old fart who knows nothing. I'm so grateful for your company. I've been out there alone for too long. Way too long.

–Anton's Background

Overview[]

Anton is one of the many Playable Characters found in the game. Anton was a mathematics professor before the war. He is the only survivor of his class after his university was destroyed, thanks to the sacrifice of his students.

He has the trait Good Mathematician. One of the developers has confirmed that his trait is not intended to have any effects,[1] nor is there any evidence of any effects in the code. He is abstinent; he has no addictions and doesn't drink Pure Alcohol or Moonshine.

Anton's in-game appearance.

Appearance[]

Anton wears a blue jacket over a dark brown turtleneck shirt, along with beige pants.

Personality[]

Anton belongs to the survivalist archetype. He is a hardened survivor, though not entirely unkind. It's implied that his students' sacrifice, and his resulting survivor's guilt, inspired him to be strong-willed and determined to survive.

Anton’s reasonably pragmatic. He’s still happy to aid others, and is greatly concerned about his fellow survivors' well-being. However, he will go to great lengths to survive, and will be more tolerant if he or others committed crimes against thugs, soldiers, or even civilians, though not without a degree of remorse. He’s least likely to commit suicide and most likely to rob the shelter when he leaves out of all archetypes.

If traumatized enough, he will permanently shift to the insensitive modifier. Anton becomes more selfish and focused on his survival. He starts to turn a blind eye to crimes, reasoning that he can regret later if he survives the war. It's worth noting that Anton can take more trauma compared to most survivors before he can no longer get the good ending, another testament to his resilience.

Strategy[]

With his below average overall stats, having the smallest inventory and second worst combat proficiency, Anton makes for a poor survivor. Since he runs slow and has only 8 inventory slots, he is not a good choice for scavenging. He is also not a good guard. He easily gets wounded when defending the shelter while other characters won't.

With that being said, he can still perform an instant kill with a stealth ambush if he has any melee weapon other than the crowbar. With enough care, and judicious use of covers, he is definitely capable of clearing most hostile locations. This is especially handy in the Anton/Cveta scenario, since Cveta can't perform instant kills under any circumstances.

Anton is fairly resistant to mood changes from moral choices, making him an acceptable choice to commit theft or murder. However, keep in mind that Moonshine or Pure Alcohol can't be used as a quick fix if his mood does drop, since he's abstinent.

Recruitment Speech[]

Good day, my name's Anton. Forgive me this intrusion... You see, I am not so young anymore, and frankly I don't think I can survive this war on my own. Would you be so kind as to let me stay with you? I promise I'll work to earn my keep!

Death Note[]

Maybe he was a famous mathematician, but for me he was a good companion. We were in this together, and now he’s dead.

Character Story[]

Note: Due to an error, both variants of the 4th segment aren't available in-game. They can only be found in the game files.

  1. "I'm so glad to be here. I apologize for my introductory tirade. But this war has taken a heavy toll on my mind. Some people who are... who were very dear to my heart gave me an order to stay alive at all costs. And since I owe them my life, it's no longer mine to throw away."
  2. "I was factually precise about my status in the academia. I was nominated for the Fields Medal once - it's like the Nobel Prize in mathematics. I'm... I used to teach and enjoyed it quite a lot. This, in turn, is in a way responsible for the impact the war had on me. I was trying to protect my brightest students for months, only to become a witness to them being killed ruthlessly."
  3. "After the destruction of the campus, I hid with my students in abandoned houses on the riverfront. We managed to survive there for a while, hunting rats for food. We punched passages in the basement walls to move from house to house safely, as the shelling and snipers were unrelenting. But the damp darkness and constant fear of being buried alive drove some brilliant minds into insanity."
  4. "The army swept through the neighborhood, going from cellar to cellar, pulling people out, shooting some on the spot, the young men especially, as "terrorist supporters". The girls were taken away. My students covered me with mattresses and ordered me to stay put. "Please, this once, professor, you must listen to us", they said. I didn't find it in me to protest."

Traumatized variants:[]

  1. "It's good to live under a roof, if a leaky one. I apologize for my tirade. But please understand, I was planning to walk out on the street in broad daylight and just wait for the bullet, had I been alone a day longer. After all that I saw I'm just tired of trying to stay alive."
  2. "I used to teach young people mathematics. It's hard to find more useless skill to have in times like these. But I know how to set a trap and cook a rat! Not a day without learning something, as I used to say to my students. They are all gone... slaughtered like cattle, or worse, for you don't terrorize animals before slaughter. It spoils the taste."
  3. "After the destruction of the university, we ran and hid. We lived in basements for endless months. We crawled through dark passages and hunted vermin to delay starvation. I saw my pupils go mad from fear, lack of hope, and deprivation. We huddled together in cellars like worms under a stone, listening to the roar of explosions, waiting for merciful death."
  4. "Finally, the army came and swept us from our hiding holes like rats. My best student Niko, who was supposed to be in Oxford this spring, was shot as a "terrorist supporter". The cries of girls being taken away will always ring in my ears. It is the cruelest irony to be the only survivor when everyone I vowed to nurture and protect is gone."

Endings[]

Spoiler Warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ending Description
Dead "Anton will never get his award. Despite his students sacrifice, he did not manage to survive. The theorem he can prove, the students he could lead and inspire - all gone."
Suicide "Even great minds can break under pressure. Consumed by guilt, Anton chose to take his own life. The sacrifice of his students was in vain."
Abandoned "One night, Anton waited patiently for the right moment and slipped out the door unnoticed. His further fate is unknown."
Rejected "It's a pity but Anton had to seek shelter elsewhere. Who needs a scientist when we can die tomorrow?"
Karma "After the war, Anton put his brilliant mind to the singular task of ensuring his own safety. He left the country and the pursuit of knowledge. He works now as an analysts for a large investment bank."
Sad "Anton managed to stay alive but war scarred him for life. He never again found the courage to attach emotionally to anyone and devoted himself entirely to the pursuit of abstract knowledge."
Good "While war left deep marks on Anton's character, he returned to teaching with new found determination. And while too old for the Fields Medal, he's still eligible for the equally prestigious Abel Prize."
